IL GRANDE TELO_TRACCE 2021
Conversano (Bari), agosto 2021. In questa settimana di ricerca abbiamo lavorato insieme con l’obbiettivo di accomodarci in piazza XX settembre, ragionando sull’abitare lo spazio pubblico e coinvolgendo la comunità. La scelta di raccogliere tessuti è venuta fuori dalle suggestioni dei primi giorni di confronto ed è stato uno strumento di relazione diretta con la gente, prima intorno la piazza e in giro per la città, poi con familiari, amici e sconosciuti.
Il tessuto -sia esso tovaglia, lenzuolo, canovaccio, stoffa- è presente in ogni abitazione, è un materiale facile da scambiare e da lavorare. E si è caricato anche dei significati della tradizione locale, come la stesa delle stoffe più belle durante la festa della Madonna della Fonte.
Ogni pezzo che compone questo grande telo è stato donato ed è diverso, così come le cuciture tra loro, perché fatte da più mani, esperte o meno; ogni pezzo porta ricordi e storie di case nello spazio della piazza.
Il “telo” occupa la piazza e la ridisegna, ma è anche fluido e mutevole: è fatto per essere sostenuto e tirato, raccolto e appoggiato, piegato e steso; per via della sua dimensione e del suo peso, può essere maneggiato solo con la collaborazione di più persone, diventando superficie di contatto e le sue possibilità di movimento dipendono dalla volontà di allinearsi su ritmo comune.
Il telo è il totem del processo che ci ha coinvolti in questa settimana: rappresenta la relazione, le sue difficoltà e opportunità, l’interno e l’esterno che si accostano e sovrappongono, il gesto quotidiano come piegare un lenzuolo che diventa eccezionale coreografia umana.
During this week of research, we worked together intending to accommodate ourselves in Piazza XX Settembre, reflecting on the inhabitation of public space and community involvement.
The choice to collect fabrics came out of the suggestions of the first days of discussion and was a tool for relating with people, starting from the square and around the city, then with the circle of our families, friends, and strangers.
The fabric - be it tablecloth, sheet, dishcloth, cloth - is present in every home, it is an easy material to exchange and to work with. It is also loaded with the meanings of local tradition, such as the laying out of the most beautiful fabrics during the feast of the Madonna della Fonte.
Each piece that contributes to this large canopy has been donated and is unique, as are the seams between them, made by several hands, expert or not; each piece brings memories as well as stories of homes to the public square.
The "cloth" occupies the square and reshapes it, but also is fluid and changeable: it is made to be stretched and pulled, picked up and laid down, folded and stretched; because of its size and weight, it can only be handled with the collaboration of several people, becoming a surface of contact and its possibilities of movement depend on the willingness to align on a common rhythm.
The sheet is the totem of the process that has involved us this week: it represents the relationship, its difficulties and opportunities, the inside and the outside that approach and overlap, the daily gesture as folding a sheet that becomes exceptional human choreography
